What’s the difference between Turo and Hui?
You’ve booked your trip to Hawaii and are now trying to decide on how to get around Oahu. You’ve heard a bit about Turo and Hui, two car sharing services on the island. With both companies, you can skip the car rental counter and manage your rental through a mobile app. What’s the difference between the two? In this article, we’ll compare the basics of Turo and Hui, including the types of vehicles available, pricing, booking processes and more.
The Basics
Turo is a peer-to-peer car sharing marketplace managed through the Turo app. Vehicles are booked directly from local car owners. Turo hosts share their own personal cars and set their own prices.
Hui is a car sharing service managed through the Hui Car Share app. The fleet of 170 vehicles is owned and operated by Servco Pacific Inc., a local automotive retail and distribution company. The name “Hui”, the Hawaiian word for “community” or “group”, refers to the community of drivers who share the fleet of cars, trucks and SUVs.
Booking a Vehicle
With Turo, you can book your vehicle through the Turo app or website. Pick-up and drop-off of the vehicle is coordinated directly with the host/owner. Most times you’ll meet up with the host to check in and pick up the keys. Some hosts offer airport pick-up or drop-off at select hotels for an additional cost. Cars equipped with Turo Go technology allow you to find and access the car from the Turo app. Returning the vehicle at the end of your trip is also coordinated through the host.
With Hui, you can book your vehicle by the minute or day through the Hui Car Share app. All vehicles are equipped with technology, that allows your smartphone to connect with a Hui vehicle; there’s no need to pick up physical keys. Walk up to a vehicle at one of Hui’s 70 stations across the island and connect via Bluetooth and unlock the doors. Most stations are open 24/7. Return the vehicle to the same station from which you picked it up. Simply end the reservation within the app.
Vehicles
Turo has the widest range of available vehicles. Car makes include Ford, Honda, Hyundai, BMW, Lamborghini and many more. The vehicles are cleaned and maintained by the individual hosts.
The Hui fleet includes 170 vehicles at 70 stations across Oahu. The fleet is comprised of Toyota and Lexus vehicles that are owned and maintained by Servco Pacific Inc., including the Toyota Corolla, Prius, RAV4 and Tacoma, as well as the Lexus NX 200 and UX 200.
Pricing
How much does Turo cost? How much does Hui cost?
Turo rentals are available by the day and rates can range from as low as $39 to over $1,000 per day, depending on the host and/or type of vehicle. Even within the same model of vehicle, rates can vary widely because individual Turo hosts determine their own pricing. Taxes and additional fees are not included in initial quotes, so keep in mind that your final cost may be much higher than what you see in the estimate. Rates may also be variable during peak travel seasons and additional fees apply for young drivers.
With Hui, reservations can be made by the hour or day, with pricing starting at $12.60/hour and $131.78/day. Rates vary depending on the type of vehicle booked. Gas, insurance and taxes are included with every reservation. Hui has no fee to sign up. If booking a Hui from a station located at or near your hotel, you can also save on parking costs.
Insurance
What kind of insurance does Turo offer? What kind of insurance does Hui offer?
Turo offers three protection plans – Premier, Standard or Minimum.
- The Premier plan costs 100% of the trip price and limits a guest’s responsibility to $0 for physical damage to a host’s vehicle.
- The Standard plan costs 40% of the trip price and limits a guest’s responsibility to $500 for physical damage to a host’s vehicle.
- The Minimum plan costs 18-25% of the trip price and limits a guest’s responsibility to $3,000 for physical damage to a host’s vehicle.
- Guests may also have the option to decline protection. Should you get into an accident, you’ll be responsible for all costs related to physical, mechanical and interior damage, along with additional administrative fees.
Coverage is highly variable and restrictions apply to each of the plans, so before choosing one, read the plan details carefully.
Every Hui reservation includes basic insurance, with a $1,000 limit for out-of-pocket costs. Read Hui’s member agreement for more information.
Gas Mileage
Is gas mileage included with Turo? With Hui?
Allotted mileage per Turo vehicle varies by the host: some hosts offer unlimited distance for a trip while others have a daily limit, such as 200 miles.
Each Hui reservation includes unlimited mileage, with a gas card available in each vehicle. While you’re not required to fill up the vehicle on your trip, Hui asks that you return the car with at least 1/4 tank of gas for the next driver.
Customer Support
Turo provides 24/7 roadside assistance. Cleaning and serving of the vehicles is managed by the individual hosts.
Hui also offers 24/7 roadside assistance. Customer support is also available 24/7, with cleaning and maintenance managed by the local Hui team.
Cancellation
With Turo, you have 24 hours to cancel your reservation for a full refund. If you book a trip with less than 24 hours’ notice, you can cancel free of charge one hour after booking. Your host also reserves the right to cancel your reservation at any time and may not necessarily provide alternative transportation.
With Hui, you can cancel your trip up to one hour prior to your trip for no charge. In the rare event that your reservation needs to be changed, the Hui team will contact you and find an alternative vehicle or transportation option.
Extras
Turo hosts may offer amenities such as child safety seats, coolers or beach gear for an additional charge.
Hui requires that drivers provide their own child safety seats.
How old do you have to be to rent on Turo?
To book with Turo, you need to create a Turo account. Applicants must be at least 18 years old with a valid driver’s license. Additional safety checks apply for younger drivers, such as an additional deposit.
Hui members must be at least 18 years old (18 with college ID) with a valid driver’s license. There’s no additional young driver fee.
The Bottom Line
